A Dunk Contest?

I am sure that many basketball fanatics tuned in to TNT in order to watch the Sprite Dunk Contest.

Said dunk contest is under a lot of scrutiny.  A new format was instituted leaving viewers, myself included very confused.  The format/rules were drastically changed to include a team face-off and east v. west individual dunk battle.

Personally do not like or even understand the new concept. Gone are the timed individual performances that allowed the greats to put on dunk clinics (i.e. Carter, Jordan, Wilkins).  The move was so confusing (as was Nick Cannon) I could not believe the contest ended after a mere handful of dunks.

Tons of bad press has ensued, including [ESPN's] Stephen A. Smith's disapproval of the new format.  I hope for the dunk contest's sake that the old format is re-instituted.  What was the NBA thinking?  This format has clearly alienated many fans, clearly evident by the twitter hashtag #dunkcontestsucks.

Perhaps they wanted to shake things up?  Im not sure that if even if they wanted to shake things up, this is what they meant.  Albeit i'll give them this, the controversy has given them a nice amount media exposure, whether good or bad.  Regardless from a business standpoint, the NBA cannot be happy with the beginning of the post-Stern era.
